Yesterday we drove about an hour to Virgin Falls State Natural Area in Sparta, TN and spent 4.5 hours hiking over 8 miles of craziness. Just to give you a sense of how unique & full we got to see the falls yesterday, here is a side by side...
Usually How we saw it yesterday
We heard people around us, who hike Virgin Falls frequently, say how crazy it was to see the falls so full- Many said they had never seen it like this. Not sure when all the rain came through, but we were not prepared for all the streams we would have to cross & mud we would be walking in...really more like rivers they were so large (bc usually they are not an issue & you can step on rocks to get across & never get wet) There was a lot of "stream jumping", muddy shoes, soaking wet feet, & filthy dogs... making it a pretty successful day of hiking ;-) The dogs had a blast swimming almost the entire time. Both falls were beautiful & the weather could not have been any more perfect, 60 & not a cloud in the sky. We had so much fun & just like we thought, neither of us could move this morning. So sore.
(The main thing we have noticed ab TN state parks is the lack of trail markings- you really have to guess where you are going about half the time, so the lost hikers doesn't surprise me at all)
There were so many great places to camp here- we wished we were staying the night
Virgin Falls
These guys were living the life - hanging in their hammocks right by the falls - perfect!
Notice the cable going across the water - you have to hold on, tightly, to that as you somehow get across without falling in - No clue how mac got across while holding onto Lucy
picture of the cable again
After we got home & cleaned up we headed back out to Sparta to the drive in. I really can't believe we made it the whole movie & didn't fall asleep. We loveeee the drive in- Something about loading Macs truck bed up with every blanket we own & tons of pillows & watching a movie under the stars. I could go every weekend.
